Citrus

Anime: Citrus.

Citrus goes beyond mere boldness with its inclusion of yuri content, as it ventures into the controversial territory of incest. The anime’s initial stages are poorly executed, leaving viewers unsettled with its disturbing content. One of the main characters begins by exerting force on the others, further intensifying the discomfort. To make matters worse, the presence of incestuous themes in Citrus attracts additional criticism. Nevertheless, the anime becomes difficult to dislike as it evolves into a captivating and heartfelt narrative. The portrayal of character development is exceptionally well-crafted, providing viewers with a deeper understanding of why Mei initially behaves so outrageously.

In terms of the Shoujo Ai genre, Citrus can be likened to the Domestic Girlfriend due to their comparable vibes, despite having distinct storylines.

Citrus, despite potentially triggering some viewers in its first two episodes, ultimately proves to be a deeply touching anime worth watching. Despite its imperfections, the series fully embraces the heartwarming tale of two lovers, regardless of their gender. Originally airing in the winter of 2018, Citrus consists of 12 episodes and was skillfully produced by studio Passione.

Adachi to Shimamura

Anime: Adachi to Shimamura.

Some anime, such as Citrus, immediately dive into the plot from the very first episode. On the other hand, anime like Adachi to Shimamura take their time to carefully establish the atmosphere and build up the storyline. If you appreciate the beauty of small, meaningful moments over grand gestures, Adachi to Shimamura is certain to deeply resonate with you. The narrative unfolds gradually, allowing us to gain insight into the inner thoughts and emotions of the two main characters. This is a conventional love story between two individuals with contrasting personalities, but it is elevated by its distinctive presentation.

At first glance, the anime may appear dull, but upon closer examination, numerous scenes are brimming with subtle symbolic meaning. Adachi to Shimamura, produced by Tezuka Production, debuted in the Fall of 2020. The anime adeptly captures the essence of drama, romance, and the tranquil world of GL anime.

Whispered Words

Anime: Whispered Words.

Whispered Words (Sasameki Koto) defies clichés, standing out as a unique story. Although it may appear similar on the surface, it distinguishes itself by embracing its yuri genre fully and avoiding unnecessary diversions. With one character openly expressing her preferences and the other being more reserved, the depiction of their relationship is expertly crafted and immensely captivating.

The surprises in the anime continue until the very end. Rather than having a sad ending, the anime concludes somewhat prematurely. While many may find it frustrating and unsatisfying, I believe it sparks a lot of contemplation. The ending isn’t the typical happily ever after, but it allows viewers to ponder all the potential outcomes. If you’re concerned about spoilers, fear not, as this anime is packed with unexpected moments in every episode.

Princess Principal

Anime: Princess Principal.

Princess Principal is an anime that may not be labeled as Shoujo Ai, but it handles the genre with utmost delicacy. It presents a thrilling storyline filled with action, focusing solely on female characters. However, even at a glance, the deep emotional connection between these characters is hard to overlook. While some may dismiss it as mere yuri-baiting, the chemistry among the characters goes far beyond superficial fan service.

The anime is among my top picks for action anime. However, if it incorporates more girls’ love, I still experience the same exhilarating rush but with an added sense of heartwarming contentment.

Plot Summary:

The setting of Princess Principal takes place in 20th century London. The anime commences with a revolutionary conflict that ultimately results in the country’s division into The Kingdom and The Commonwealth. Seeking retaliation, The Commonwealth devises a scheme to take action. They opt to substitute the Princess with one of their spies, Ange, as a means of exacting revenge.

The dynamic shifts when the Princess proposes an exchange: she will assist in attaining the throne in exchange for their help. The anime chronicles the journey of the spies and the Princess as they work together to accomplish their mission.

Riddle Story Of Devil, also known as Akuma no Riddle, is a 2014 anime produced by studio Diomedea. If you’re looking for a convincing Shoujo Ai content, Princess Principal may not be enough, but Riddle Story Of Devil is an action-packed GL anime that I highly recommend. This anime offers heartwarming moments between the characters and I personally enjoyed it for its varied genres. While it may not be perfect, it remains intriguing until the end. Occasionally, the plot becomes predictable, but the overall quality is still very interesting. Additionally, the animation and art style in this anime are great.

The anime lacks certain aspects that the manga includes, resulting in a diminished impact at times. Thus, I suggest that people catch up with the manga in order to fully appreciate the brilliance of the plot.

Kakegurui

Anime: Kakegurui xx

Kakegurui is another anime that doesn’t have a Shoujo Ai tag, but there are definitely elements of GL present. Whether it’s the yandere character Midari or the high maintenance secretary Sayaka, there are hints of romantic relationships between female characters throughout the series. These moments only add to the excitement and depth of the show. Those who don’t categorize Kakegurui as Shoujo Ai may have overlooked Sayaka’s confession in season two or Midari’s intense obsession with Yumeko. Additionally, the interactions between Mary Saotome and Ririka Momobami were incredibly heartwarming.

The anime is created by MAPPA and consists of two seasons. The manga, which serves as the original material, is still being published.

Anime- Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne no Masume-tachi.

Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi, also known as Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne, is a supernatural Shoujo Ai anime that stands out for its daring and heartwarming scenes. It has gained high ratings for its unique approach. Initially, the content may be challenging to comprehend, but once you grasp it, the anime becomes quite enjoyable. The GL (Girls’ Love) aspect is presented unabashedly, but it is not treated as a joke or for mere entertainment. What I appreciate most about the series is the authentic relationships between the characters, rather than relying solely on fan service moments.

Mnemosyne: Mnemosyne no Masume-tachi is a series that may not appeal to everyone due to its graphic and potentially offensive scenes. The anime contains a significant amount of adult content, to the extent that it is often categorized as explicit material.

Anime: Happy Sugar Life.

Happy Sugar Life earns a spot on this list due to its exceptionally disturbing content. Although many categorize it as a psychological anime, it is important not to overlook the progression of events from bad to worse within the plot. Unlike the majority of lighthearted and wholesome content on this list, Happy Sugar Life delves into the unhealthy and perilous bond that Satou develops with a young girl she encounters. At its core, Happy Sugar Life revolves around themes of Shoujo Ai, with Satou experiencing a love at first sight for Shio. However, this love ultimately spirals into uncontrollable chaos.

The significance of Shio in Satou’s life, and vice versa, has been repeatedly emphasized. Happy Sugar Life offers the perfect combination for fans of psychological thrillers who are also craving some Shoujo Ai.

Nevertheless, as soon as individuals begin their search for Shio, Satou becomes prepared to unleash a violent rampage in order to prevent any separation from her.

Sakura Trick

Sakura Trick is an extremely popular Shoujo Ai anime that comes highly recommended. Its vast popularity can be attributed to the satisfying fluff and beautifully executed moments that will give you chills. The anime has a simple and straightforward plot, making it a light-hearted series with a touch of comedy. If you’re in search of a lighthearted anime filled with affectionate physical intimacy, Sakura Trick is a must-watch. However, despite its overall adorableness, the lack of a strong plot tends to cause viewers to lose interest and drop the anime fairly quickly.

Although Sakura Trick begins with a lot of enthusiasm, the repetitive scenes make it difficult to sustain interest.
