Surprisingly, despite his success, García Luna finds himself featured in a Mexican crime TV series. This unexpected development is a consequence of his inclusion in a roster containing the 10 most corrupt individuals in Mexico.

Forbes published the article in 2013, despite Garcia’s self-imposed silence. However, he made an exception and wrote a personal letter to Steve Forbes, expressing his dissatisfaction with being included on the list. Garcia vehemently denies all allegations made against him, asserting that they are fabricated lies resulting from inadequate journalistic inquiry.

The proof emerged in subsequent years through a legal investigation into his activities. It was revealed that he had connections with the Sinaloa Cartel. The trials commenced in 2018 for Joaquin Guzman, the notorious drug lord commonly referred to as El Chapo. His associates, Ismael Zambara and Jesus Garcia, were also implicated in wrongdoing. The three of them testified that they had sent substantial amounts of money in bribes to García Luna, often concealed in suitcases filled with cash. Despite being arrested on these charges, García Luna maintained his plea of innocence.

García Luna, who was arrested in 2019, claimed to be in Dallas at the time. However, due to the trials and his inability to present evidence of his income, his credibility has greatly diminished. He has failed to disclose his personal wealth to the court and his possession of opulent residences and an extensive real estate empire in Mexico City raises suspicions. These properties are beyond the financial means of individuals in similar government positions as García Luna, leading to speculation that he may have inherited some of them.

The fact that García Luna remains arrested in the United States is concerning. The Attorney General of Mexico is actively seeking his extradition to face the same charges in Mexico.
