Plot

The story takes place 97 years after a catastrophic event renders Earth uninhabitable. In order to assess the planet’s viability for human life once more, the Council of the space station known as the Ark opts to dispatch a team of teenage prisoners on a reconnaissance mission. Amongst them is Clarke Griffin, portrayed by Eliza Taylor, who happens to be the daughter of Dr. Abby Griffin, a prominent figure on the Ark played by Paige Turco.

Bob Morley and Marie Avgeropoulos portray Bellamy Blake and Octavia Blake, respectively, in the group. They play the roles of brother and sister. Bellamy takes up the responsibility of safeguarding his sister as they journey to Earth aboard the ship. The Ark’s regulations state that a couple can only have a single child, a rule that Bellamy’s parents violate when they have Octavia. As a consequence, they face severe repercussions. As the show progresses, Clarke and Bellamy emerge as the leaders of the group, making numerous sacrifices to ensure their survival.

Clarke’s Relationships:

Clarke and Finn

On the show, Clarke experiences three significant romantic relationships. Her first partner is Finn Collins, portrayed by Thomas McDonell, who is also a member of the team sent to Earth. Shortly after their arrival, Clarke and Finn embark on a romantic journey. However, their relationship becomes complicated when Clarke discovers that Finn has a girlfriend named Raven, played by Lindsey Morgan. Eventually, both of Finn’s relationships with Clarke and Raven come to an end. Despite their enduring love for each other, Clarke and Finn’s relationship reaches its tragic conclusion when Lexa, the Commander of the Grounders, condemns Finn to death by a thousand cuts due to his killings of her people. In an act of mercy, Clarke ultimately takes it upon herself to end Finn’s life swiftly and prevent him from experiencing a slow and agonizing death.

Clarke and Lexa

Clarke’s second romantic involvement was with Lexa, portrayed by Alycia Debnam-Carey, who held the position of Commander among the Grounders. They initially establish their bond by agreeing to establish peace between the Grounders and the Sky Crew. Their shared challenges of leading their respective factions bring them closer together. Their relationship is undoubtedly complex, as they must balance maintaining peace among their people while navigating their romantic connection. Both having experienced the loss of previous partners, they develop a profound love for each other. However, tragedy strikes when Lexa’s Flamekeeper, Titus, unintentionally shoots her while attempting to assassinate Clarke. Lexa’s wounds prove fatal, leading to her eventual demise. Many fans consider Lexa to be Clarke’s most significant love interest. In the series finale, the Judge appears in the form of Lexa, providing further validation to this belief.

Clarke and Niylah

Clarke’s third relationship, which was also the shortest, involved Niylah, portrayed by Jessica Harmon. Niylah was a Grounder who operated a trading post alongside her father. In seasons 3 and 4, they engage in intimacy on two occasions; however, their connection doesn’t develop into a romantic relationship. After being apart for six years, they unexpectedly meet again in season 5. Despite having moved on individually, they still hold affection for one another.

Clarke and Bellamy

Although Clarke and Bellamy never entered a romantic relationship on the show, it is important to note that they were the most popular couple among fans. Many viewers, especially those familiar with the novels, hoped for Clarke and Bellamy to end up together. However, their dynamic on the show remained that of best friends, with a deep love for each other that was purely platonic. This decision was carefully considered, as Clarke’s relationships with women, particularly Lexa, had a profound impact on the LGBTQ+ community. The positive portrayal of these relationships was widely embraced by many.

Who does Clarke end up with?

Many fans expressed their disappointment with the series finale, feeling that the characters, particularly Clarke, deserved a better outcome. The series concludes with the human race transcending to a painless, eternal existence. However, due to the sins committed in her quest for survival, Clarke is unable to transcend. She finds solace on Earth with her loyal companion, Picasso the dog. Unexpectedly, she is visited by the Judge, who takes the form of Lexa, and informs her that her friends have returned to be by her side, indicating she is not alone. It is revealed that they cannot have children and will eventually die without transcending. Ultimately, Clarke does not end up in a romantic relationship but instead remains on Earth with her friends.
