Spindleworks opens this year’s gallery season with an exhibit that has been in the making for over two years. Return to Sender features 16 collaborative works created by almost 40 artists through a mail art project spanning Maine and Rhode Island, and three art programs. The artists of Spindleworks joined forces with the artists from Downtown Pawtucket’s Flying Shuttles and RHD-RI’s Second Sight to create a dynamic visual conversation of near epic proportions. Showing through the end of May in historic Brunswick, Maine.

The second in a series of 12 shows in 2012, Collaborations is a show about community.  What could be more appropriate in a program like RHD where cooperation, teamwork and a harmonious community are essential parts of each day?  This show puts in visual form what each client, staff member and visitor at RHD experiences everyday: people working together.  In these works, distinct and separate artistic styles blend together to create unique experiences that neither artist could have created alone.  It is when we all rely on each other’s individual talents that the entire group can succeed. Thank you to our many artists that worked together to create a beautifully successful showcase of everyday cooperation.

This will be a full scale group show featuring most of our artists. ]]> “House On Fire!” is a group show featuring most of the artists that currently attend RHD-RI. This is the third annual summer exhibition at Firehouse 13, and this one will be bigger and better than ever! We will be filling the walls with an immense range of artwork. There will be a variety of mediums represented, including paintings, drawings, ceramics, prints, cards, tote bags, and a variety of other merchandise. The music night (which will be held after the closing reception on August 20th) will feature a number of client-based bands performing original music. The video night (August 18th) will feature videos that have been made in-house at the RHD-RI studios. These videos range from commercial and television spoofs to artist profiles of some of our more prolific artists, as well as comedy sketches and experimental cinema.

• Opening Reception on Thursday, August 4th from 6pm-8pm

• Video Night on Thursday, August 18th from 8pm-10pm

• Closing Reception, followed by live music on Saturday, August 20th from 6pm-11pm

All events will be held at Firehouse 13, located at 41 Central street in Providence, RI

Get to know Tammy

Tammy is a whirlwind of art making. She always has multiple projects going at once. Working in a variety of mediums, she leaves her mark on just about everything that she comes into contact with, be it pieces of scrap paper, magazines, fabric, time sheets, pamphlets that she has acquired from various locations, and even other people’s artwork. Nothing is safe from inclusion into one of Tammy’s creations. Layers upon layers go into Tammy’s paintings and drawings, as well as her wrapped sculptural pieces, in which there are often hidden treasures beneath the layers of paper, tape, paint, beads and glue. She is also a founding member of the RHD band Tomorrowcats

On Tuesday, we went on a field trip the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Connecticut. We saw white whales, penguins and frogs and birds in the outdoor exhibitions.

The inside aquarium had a huge tank with sharks, eels, jelly fish and other kinds. We saw some exotic fish which were colorful.

We saw a training session with an oily penguin that it caught the oil spill in the Gulf. The trainers were trying to rehabilitate it to go back to its home in the Gulf.

And then we saw eels and frogs and birds. We enjoyed the field trip to the Mystic Aquarium.

The artists featured in this show are all heavily influenced by comic books, video games, science fiction and horror films, and various other pop culture references. The subject matter ranges from comic book character studies to demons and everything in between. There will be a variety of mediums represented, including paintings, drawings, ceramics, and writings.

An Artist Reception will be held on Friday, May 20^th from 6pm-8pm at the Second Sight Gallery, which is located in the RHD-RI studio building.
